"Let the little children come . . . "

Children are gifts from God. First United Methodist Church welcomes all children to participate in the ministries of the church. We commit to creating a safe place for children to

  • explore their faith through learning the stories and rituals of our faith in creative and meaningful ways
  • develop relationships centered in Christ’s love
  • put their faith into practice by participating in missions projects and activities and showing Christ’s love to others

Our Nursery and Toddler rooms are located below the Sanctuary along with Children's Sunday School Classes. Sunday childcare is provided during all worship and Sunday School sessions. Every worship service has an infant and toddler nursery staffed by a professional and volunteers. Worship bags with various supplies such as crayons, paper, and playdough are available to help children engage in worship.

We have a fabulous PreK-Kindergarten class, led by Kim Britt. They use arts and crafts, storybooks, games, and music to teach the children Bible stories and ways we live out our faith.

*Note: Due to Covid, we are currently not having Sunday school for children. Stay tuned for more information.
Pre-Covid Sunday School:
The 1st grade – 5th grade Sunday school class enjoys a rotation of teachers that guide the children to learn Bible stories/characters and ways we follow Jesus’ commandments to Love God and Love our neighbor. We enjoy music, arts and crafts, drama, mission projects, and games as we learn, laugh, and play together. Sunday School is from 9:30-10:15 a.m.

Children age seven and older are encouraged to serve as acolytes and crucifers during the 10:30am worship service. A special training educates children on the significance and importance of the "Bearer of the Light" in the overall worship experience. Acolytes and crucifers serve by processing the cross and the light to the altar candles and by recessing the light at the close of worship. The church provides a black robe and the appropriate seasonal collar for the child to wear.

Following the example of Christ, First Church welcomes children of all ages and we welcome the sounds & activity that accompany them! The Pray-Ground is an area located near the Praise Café that offers children 5 & under a space to quietly engage in age appropriate activities while experiencing worship with their families during our 8:30 a.m. Praise Service. In addition to the Pray-Ground there are activity bags available as well as Nurseries for babies & toddlers located across the breezeway in the Education Bldg.

Youth & Kids (YAK)

Youth & Kids is the new name for Kids for Christ for this school year (2021-2022). We will gather on Wednesdays after school. This year's theme is "Do Good" - with a focus on missions and making a difference in the community. YAK is for 1st graders through 10th graders; middle & high schoolers learn leadership development skills and often facilitate games & discussions with the younger groups. There is also time to split into middle school/elementary school groups for more focused lessons & activities. We follow Catawba County School’s schedule.

Each week we begin our time together with free play, then share a delicious, healthy snack together. We then enjoy engaging worship, storytime, and an assortment of other activities. FUN filled activities such as drama, art, games, music, and mission projects help us learn about Jesus and how we can share God’s love with others.

Your child is WELCOME at Youth & Kids! The program is provided by First Newton UMC for the entire community. There is no charge for the program and registrations are accepted throughout the year. Mini-Bus transportation is provided for Newton-Conover Middle School; Trusted adults & parents carpool to other elementary/middle schools.
